Description: This is a quick read for medical students on an obstetrics/gynecology rotation. It features 60 cases with multiple-choice questions. This fifth edition incorporates recent changes to the literature.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students with quick and easily digestible information in a case-based format. The book does a good job with this.
Audience: The audience is medical students. The book is written by reputable authors.
Features: Using cases to introduce different topics in the field, the book is written as if the author is speaking directly to reader, walking them through the thought process in the case. For example, the case on labor dystocia describes the clinical presentation and helps bring in the evidence with recent updates to labor curves to teach management of labor. Pearls at the end of each chapter support the material, and multiple-choice questions reinforce it. These are standard and done well. The big challenge with this book is the arrangement of material. The table of contents is long and readers are more likely to pick it up and challenge themselves with whichever case pops up. As such, the book is less for self-directed learning and more for self-directed quizzing. It is a useful tool for students.
Assessment: This is a very simple book that provides obstetrics/gynecology cases and quizzes for students. However, the book uses opinion on some comprehension questions. For instance, 28.1 discusses a patient with a history of abruption at 38 weeks and recommends induction of labor at 37 weeks in future pregnancies. This recommendation does not include a discussion of early term consequences or ACOG management. The thought process that it goes through is good, but it could benefit from the inclusion of practice bulletins.
