About the Author

Lee Lockwood first arrived in Cuba on December 31, 1958—the day before Fidel Castro took power. He has since made more than thirty trips there, writing and reporting on the revolution for publications such as Life, Newsweek, The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, and The London Times.Lockwood was a staff photojournalist with the Black Star Photo Agency for more than twenty-five years, and his photographs are in several major museum collections. Other published works include books about Eldridge Cleaver and Father Daniel Berrigan. Lockwood's documentary film, "The Holy Outlaw," about Father Berrigan's fugitive life underground, was shown on National Educational Television. He won the 1967 Overseas Press Club award for distinguished foreign reporting for Castro's Cuba, Cuba's Fidel and for his report on North Vietnam, "Behind the Enemy Lines," in Life magazine. He is the founder of the Center for Cuban Studies in New York.
