About the Author

JODI WHEELER-TOPPEN is an author of more than 10 science books for children and teachers. A former high school science teacher, with a Ph.D. in science education from the University of Georgia, Wheeler-Toppen is passionate about presenting science as exciting, suspenseful, and understandable. She has written two book for National Geographic, including Dog Science Unleashed and Edible Science: Experiments You Can Eat, which was a Junior Library Guild selection. She also has a series on teaching strategies and activities from the National Science Teachers Association Press.

Gr 3–7-This book will be a delight to children who love cats and want to learn more about them using hands-on experiments. Each of the four chapters (Fit Felines, Sensational Senses, Purrfect Predators, and Clever Kitties) offer several different activities that the reader can do to test their pets' sense of smell, ability to learn new tricks and hunt for imagined prey, etc., and feature photos of children, their cats, and scientist helpers. Each chapter begins with introductory material on feline traits and proceeds to describe experiments associated with them. The experiments require basic materials that can be found in most households and offer clearly numbered steps, along with a time estimate and difficulty level. The photographs are plentiful and displayed nicely with textual information. Introductory material on how to use the book, a glossary of terms, a list of additional resources (including websites), and an index round out additional material provided. VERDICT All children who want to know more about cats will thoroughly enjoy this book.
