Description: This is an update of a well-received immunology book. Given the constant modifications to our knowledge of immunology, new editions are always welcome, and the previous edition was published in 2012. Most of the chapter headings are as found in previous editions, but one significant change is the reorganization of the material devoted to T lymphocyte responses.
Purpose: As has always been the case, the purpose is to provide an easily accessible understanding of the basic principles of immunology, particularly with respect to human disease. The field of immunology changes so rapidly that updates are a necessity.
Audience: This is intended as an introductory book for medical, graduate, and undergraduate students of immunology. It also could serve as a general reference for physicians who may not be up to date. The authors are well-known and respected immunologists.
Features: As in previous editions, the book represents a basic and complete description of what is currently known about the immune system. As our knowledge increases, the focus shifts more to the use of basic principles to develop rational immunological therapies. Updated illustrations help students understand basic concepts. Each chapter includes a summary of the important points that students should have learned, as well as suggested readings. Online access to the book is available through StudentConsult.com. Besides access to the book itself, the online version is easy to search, includes a question bank, and makes available illustrations for presentations and animations. There is a large glossary, a list of cytokines, and a list of CD markers. A chapter describing commonly used laboratory techniques should be quite useful.
Assessment: A book that is now in its eighth edition is obviously one that has been found to be useful by students and instructors. This is one of the more popular choices among immunology books. For some students, it might provide more information than they need, but that depends entirely on the level of the course. In any event, it would surely be an excellent resource. Given the rapid changes in what we know about immunology, the need for this new edition should be obvious.
