Matthew Arnold (1822 -1888) was an English poet, and cultural critic. Arnold was a sage writer chastising his reader on various social issues. When Arnold wanted to marry he took the job of school inspector. He described this job as drudgery. Because of his job he knew the provincial culture of England better than any of his contemporaries. After publishing several books of poetry Arnold was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1857. He was the first to deliver his lectures in English rather than Latin. Celtic Literature
