Current divisions in the United States have had a profound effect on Christian followers, with many losing sight of morality. Consequently, the Church's credibility has sharply declined. Rather than the historic image as a beacon on a hill, its light has dimmed; societies aren't doing all that they can to engage in promoting love, humility, self-sacrifice, empathy, community, and the courage to oppose injustices. This is Vreeland's (pastor, Word of Life Church; By the Way: Getting Serious About Following Jesus) principal assessment of the source of the United States' social instability. He counsels that Christians need to refocus and reimagine their vision of the crucified Christ as the "peaceable Lamb," rather than as a weapon in contentious culture wars. In addition to being a commentary on the state of Christian faith in the U.S., the book, with its scriptures, set prayers, and discussion questions, is structured to be used in study groups, in workshop settings, and as a devotional resource. It covers three areas of life: spiritual formation, moral living, and community. VERDICT Christians who consider themselves evangelical will especially be drawn to this title that focuses on Christian discipleship and spiritual growth for troubled times.—Glen Edward Taul
