About the Author

Fong Chan, Ph.D is the Norman L. and Barbara M. Berven Professor of Rehabilitation Psychology (Emeritus) in the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Malachy Bishop, PhD, CRC, is the Norman L. and Barbara M. Berven Professor of Rehabilitation Psychology in the Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education Department at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Previously, he served as professor and doctoral program coordinator in the rehabilitation counseling program at the University of Kentucky and as Director of Research for the University of Kentucky's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, the Interdisciplinary Human Development Institute. He obtained his PhD in rehabilitation psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and his master's degree in rehabilitation counseling from Portland State University.

Julie Chronister, PhD, CRC, is a professor in the Department of Counseling at San Francisco State University.

Eun-Jeong Lee, Ph.D., CRC, LCPC is an associate professor of Counseling and Rehabilitation Science Division in the Department of Psychology at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Description: This book provides an overview of the certified rehabilitation counseling exam. It reviews the major aspects of rehabilitation counseling and explores test-taking strategies with sample examination questions and explanatory answers. This is the third edition, last published in 2017.
Purpose: According to the preface, "in the first edition of this guide, we indicated that the purpose of the book is to provide a concise yet comprehensive preparation guide for the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) examination. In the development of this third edition, this has remained our purpose and commitment" (p. xi). These are very worthy objectives. Presenting the material in print and online format adds value because it increases accessibility and searchability. The book and website meet the stated objectives.
Audience: According to the back cover, the target audience is graduate students and professionals who are preparing for the certified rehabilitation counselor examination. The book meets the needs of this intended audience. The editors are credible authorities in the subject matter of the book as professors at University of Wisconsin-Madison, San Francisco State University, Illinois Institute of Technology-Chicago, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The contributing authors are affiliated with well-known institutions of higher learning in the United States and Turkey.
Features: The book begins with an introduction, along with test-taking strategies. It presents the history of vocational rehabilitation, along with ethical/professional issues, followed by evidence-based practice used in rehabilitation. It covers various theoretical approaches that can be used with family and group work, including crisis and trauma counseling, which has been emphasized in the past decade or so. The process of vocational counseling begins with assessment, which can include intellectual, personality, and career aptitude testing. A counselor must be aware of the perceptions of employers when considering hiring people with disabilities. Case management is an important part of the counselor's duties, especially in collaboration with other disciplines. Counselors help individuals with chronic conditions to manage their symptoms and increase their quality of life, often with assistive technology. Finally, research helps the field to advance and develop more evidence-based practices and procedures. The book is very readable and contains illustrative tables, which help clarify the text. There are sample tests in most of the chapters and a mock examination with explanatory answers at the end.
Assessment: This book is excellent because it discusses the substantive areas of rehabilitation counseling and provides strategies on how to prepare for the test. The sample tests are excellent in learning about the areas readers need to focus on more. The third edition justifies replacing the second because the content has been updated, along with more sample questions and expanded internet resources.
