Overview

The CLASS Character Education Curriculum is a resource for teaching character in the 7-12 educational setting. The curriculum includes a collection of lessons divided into three modules. Lessons in Module 1 focus on what every student leader with the desire to improve their leadership needs to know including definitions, traits, characteristics of leaders, and what leadership is all about. Module 2 lessons focus on leading peers from a character development perspective. Module 3 lessons focus on maintaining and developing character through the difficult processes of decision making, goal setting and change.

Each module contains lessons and more than 100 suggested activities ready to go for use in the classroom. The lessons are developed as a curriculum for teachers to teach students how to develop character and lead peers in the school setting.

The student centered curriculum is a structured, pragmatic, user friendly guide purposefully organized to teach people how to lead with minor teacher facilitation. The curriculum approaches character and leadership from general self-leadership principles of character and traits of effective leaders to aspects of peer leadership dynamics, goal setting and decision making.

Each lesson includes brief but clear topical information for the facilitator and provides activity and lesson plan options to incorporate as desired. The curriculum is designed to be easily adapted and modified to address timely character or leadership issues and specific needs.

About the Author

Dr. Willenbrock is currently an athletic administrator in Washington State with twenty years of football coaching experience; eighteen at the college level. He started his career at San Francisco State (DII), and after a stint at The University of South Dakota (DII), he returned to Pennsylvania assisting at Allegheny College (DIII). In 2002 he accepted the head job at The University of Puget Sound (WA) and went to work transforming the culture of the Football Team. He led them to their most productive 5 consecutive seasons in 20 years from 2004-2008.
Through the trials and challenges involved with a turnaround process, he began an intense interest and study in the dynamics of character and leadership, earning a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Seattle University in 2009. The topic of his dissertation; Shared Leadership as a System of Team Captaincy in College Football, provides insight into peer leadership and changing school culture through a commitment to leadership development. After going 1-17 his first two seasons at Puget Sound, it became apparent that one critical aspect of team culture had not yet been addressed: peer leadership (the influence of teammates on each other).
Using a Shared Peer Leadership approach, a transformative culture was established. The teaching strategies and lessons used through the culture change established a platform for the C.L.A.S.S. Character Education Curriculum. A shared leadership system with a focus on character can stimulate culture change that increases citizenship behavior, buy-in, enthusiasm, mutual respect, communication, service and eliminates Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying behavior. A pro-active, purposeful commitment to develop individual character enables teachers and administrators to incorporate a system of leadership development that will pay dividends in the short term and lasting lessons into the future. The C.L.A.S.S. Curriculum has proven adaptable as the basis of a high school freshman leadership class. As schools search for an effective leadership curriculum, Dr. Willenbrock has developed standards, assessments and lesson plans that address many of the key concepts included in the complete three Module Curriculum.
