CHARLEMAGNE: VOLUME ONE: CAROLINGIAN DYNASTY RISE TO POWER AND THE SAXON WAR
Between the Ancient Roman world and the modern world of Napoleon's empire, there was only one person who controlled and unified most of Western Europe, and that was Charles the Great, or Charlemagne. Often referred to as the "Father of Europe", Charlemagne was a member of the Carolingian Dynasty who seized power from the Merovingian Franks in 750 CE. Under Charlemagne, the Carolingian Empire extended over what would be modern-day France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, parts of western Germany, Austria, northern Italy, and parts of northeast Spain. By establishing a central government over Western Europe, Charlemagne restored much of the unity of the old Roman Empire and paved the way for the development of modern Europe.

During his reign, Charlemagne was both a Christian and crusader who united the worlds of politics and religion. His most demanding military undertaking was against the pagan Saxons, longtime adversaries of the Franks whose conquest required more than 30 years of campaigning (772 to 804). This struggle, which led to the annexation of a large block of territory between the Rhine and the Elbe rivers, was marked by pillaging, broken truces, hostage taking, mass killings, and deportation. Soon after the Saxon War began, Charlemagne formed an alliance with the papacy and in 774 created the papal state in central Italy. On Christmas Day 800 CE, Charlemagne was crowned emperor of the restored Roman Empire by Pope Leo III.
