Overview

As you will learn, the Carolingian renaissance was one in which people strictly followed established rules and practices. It started during the reign of Charlemagne in the late 8th century and lasted until the breakup of Charlemagne's empire at the end of the 9th century. It was fundamentally Christian, enforced through laws and edicts issued by Charlemagne, and carried out by the clergy. In this case, the Carolingian renaissance was the spiritual rebirth of the individual meant to open the gateway to the sacraments and a place in heaven.
