Description: This massive volume is a discussion of the teratogenic potential of thousands of compounds in 1109 pages.
Purpose: The author's purpose is to the catalogue the teratogenic potential of all drugs and chemicals; he says that the unique characteristic of this book is his correlation of laboratory and clinical data. While these may be worthy objectives, they do not appear to have been met especially well, and there is no obvious need for this particular volume. In the foreword, Brent points out that there are many other similar books available, and asks whether all of them really are needed. A reading of this contribution to this crowded market indicates that the answer may be, "No."
Audience: The author intends that this book be used as a reference by both experimentalists and clinicians, although there is more information that might be useful to the former.
Features: He presents a great breadth and depth of information about the history of teratology research; the first chapter is especially good in this respect, with such venerable nuggets as Wilson's three "established principles." But there is far less to offer the reader interested in modern concepts of molecular genetics or pharmacology as they relate to perturbed development. In a sense, this book is most useful as an historical document.
Assessment: This third edition does not add significantly to former editions, thus the original goals are not expanded. Furthermore, the author does not even attempt to meet the challenge offered to the teratology community by contemporary molecular genetics and other aspects of the new developmental sciences. Thus, this is an outmoded and repetitious edition, and there is no obvious reason to replace the second edition with this volume. Save your money.
