About the Author

MARGERY LEVEEN SHER has been a teacher, an advocate, an advisor, and an administrator for 20 years. She is an authority on family and dependent care sues and early childhood education. In 1984, Ms. Sher was selected Child Care Professional of the Year by Fairfax County, Virginia. She was appointed a member of the Day Care Council of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1985, as well as a member of the Virginia General Assembly Joint Subcommittee to study corporate involvement in child care. Ms. Sher has served on the national advisory panel of the Child Care Action Campaign since 1988. She currently serves on the board of the Greater Washington Businesses for Social Responsibility. Ms. Sher is listed in Who's Who of American Women.

MADELINE FRIED is an expert in the work and family field. She has more than 25 years of experience in teaching, supervision, administration, community relations, fiscal management, and family advocacy. She has developed innovative programs in employer-supported child care, child care consortia, family satellite care systems, school-age programs, and infant child care. Fairfax County, Virginia named Ms. Fried Child Care Professional of the Year in 1986. She was named a commissioner of the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs and has been elected to the board of ACCCI—Society of Work-Family Professionals.
