Written by a former librarian, this helpful, well-balanced bibliography includes approximately 390 books, organized by type: fiction, folklore, storytelling/drama, poetry/anthologies, and nonfiction. The purpose of the volume is to identify titles by Native Americans; thus, inclusion does not necessarily mean that a book is endorsed or recommended. In the introduction to each section, the author briefly lists additional authors, performers, or materials. Other sections cover resources (books by non-Native authors), author/illustrator biographies, and a list of publishers. There is an index to titles, authors, illustrators, and nations represented. In addition to basic publication data, each entry includes a succinct summary, subject headings, interest/reading levels, journals in which the books were reviewed, awards, acceptance by reading programs such as Accelerated Reader, relevant Web sites, etc. York is sensitive to the difficulties in creating such a bibliography, such as variations in the spelling of Indian names and nation titles.
