This collection of essays, based on talks originally presented at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) fall conference in 1999, would be a fine textbook for graduate courses in education and library science. The articles trace trends and developments in American children's literature in the 20th century and cover topics such as children's book publishing, folklore, poetry, nonfiction, African Americans and Native Americans in children's literature, historical fiction, young adult literature, and children's literature in the classroom. Some of the best pieces feature personal reflections, such as those by Uri Shulevitz, who remembers his childhood and his start as an illustrator working with Ursula Norstrom; and Lois Lowry, who muses about the false picture of family life presented in the children's books of her youth. Other contributors include Julius Lester, Jane Yolen, Michael Cart, Leonard S. Marcus, and Lee Bennett Hopkins.
