Description: This is an examination of the role of technology assessment in chiropractic practice. The lion's share of space is devoted to examining diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, especially for those that are involved in the most frequently seen chiropractic conditions.
Purpose: The editors state that the purpose is to help practitioners find an evidence-based middle ground for understanding reasonable processes and conclusions for providing necessary care to meet patient and community needs.
Audience: This text will find a welcome reception among chiropractic practitioners, especially those who have made themselves comfortable in the new managed care environment. Students will find much of value as well.
Features: First, the editors provide an overview of technology assessment, including information on formal processes in healthcare, public and occupational health regulations, and decision analysis. Then much of the rest of the text is an examination of specific diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, such as orthopedic testing, radiology, functional capacity examination, etc. The editors supplement the discussion with algorithms for material presented in each chapter.
Assessment: There is no book in the chiropractic profession that covers this information. One worry that I have is that since the text is derived from articles that were been published in the past, the scope of coverage is necessarily limited to those articles, and it therefore does not adequately do justice to topic areas that might be of greater interest to the practicing chiropractor. However, the editors and contributors do a very good job in the material they do present, though much of it is academic in presentation rather than clinically oriented.
