Christine Jorgensen sex reassignment was among the first of its kind. The former Army Private from the Bronx had gone to Copenhagen, Denmark in 1950 as a tourist. When he returned to his home in the United States he was no longer George. Instead with extended hormone therapy treatments and the collaboration of a number of Danish surgeons, the former GI became Christine Jorgensen. Christine invited the inquiries of the American Medical Association upon her return to the Bronx in December 1952. The following year she launched a successful nightclub career that continued for some years.
