PreS—A little red train spends its day going "clickety clack" on the railroad track. It chugs by the breezy seashore, through the tranquil forest, and into and out of a big city. At last, the little train ends its long day at the quiet rural station. Unbeknownst to the train, a few feathered passengers have hopped aboard as it traveled over bridges and up and down hills. This delightful title includes numbers, colors, places, animals, and more. The simplicity of the illustrations makes the book perfect for preschoolers. The hand-printed paper and acrylic paints add shading, texture, and detail. The train cars are boldly numbered one through four. The number of birds who join the ride corresponds with the colorful numerals on the cars to help children count and identify the digits. The large, bold text complements, but does not interfere with, the illustrations. Young ones will enjoy predicting the train's next destination and who might join the locomotive ride. Children will also like the repetitive sounds of "clickety clack"and "chugga chugga choo choo." VERDICT A fun read-aloud for young listeners and train enthusiasts.
