The Civil War, always a popular genre, has shown increasing publishing activity since ``The Civil War'' series aired on PBS in 1990. This latest entry offers questions and answers ranging from quick, Trivial Pursuit-type questions to near-essays on military strategy. The material is well researched, with only one factual error detected by this reviewer: the unfortunate farmer, Wilmer McLean, on whose land the war virtually began and ended, moved his family from Manassas to Appomattox to avoid the fighting. Malone has added to McLean's troubles by moving him to Gettysburg in 1863. The book's greatest drawback is its lack of an index; its organization is strictly chronological. To find information on the Battle of the Wilderness one needs to know that it took place in May 1864.
