Harriet Ziefert portrays this all too common struggle between parent and child with wit and humor, while Emily Bolam's artwork captures Clara Ann's emotions perfectly. Children will delight in making faces along with Clara Ann as she gets dressed.

About the Author

Harriet Ziefert draws on a true story told to her by Santiago Cohen for the text of this Christmas tale. This is her first picture book collaboration with him, though they know each other from their many years in neighboring New Jersey towns.

Emily Bolam was born and raised in the English countryside. She studied illustration at Brighton College of Art and has illustrated many popular books for children, including Murphy Meets the Treadmill, Louie’s Goose, Clara Ann Cookie, and I Swapped My Dog.

PreS-A story in rhyme about a little girl who balks at getting dressed in the morning, until her mother distracts her by making up a game. By having Clara make various faces in the mirror, ranging from "very mean" to "very mad" to "sick" to "happy and silly," the little girl becomes so preoccupied that before long, with her mother's assistance, she is fully dressed and ready to go. Full-page illustrations in bright colors capture the behavior of the recalcitrant child and the patient resourcefulness of the mother. Children will readily identify with Clara, while parents of preschoolers may be gently amused by a trick they could try on their own stubborn offspring.
