About the Author

Mary Newell DePalma's illustrations have appeared in newspapers, books, and magazines. Some of her assignments have involved drawing giraffes, cans of shrimp, mice, matchsticks, and pork chops. The Strange Egg is the first children's book that she has both written and illustrated. She lives in Boston with her husband and their two children.

Gr 1-2-These beginning readers center around the activities of Mrs. Shay's elementary classroom. Of the three, Hatching Chicks is the best as it provides information in a simple, clear, and sequential manner. In Cookout, the teacher asks a student to find out how many hot dogs will be needed for a cookout. As the boy surveys his classmates, the counting gets bogged down by their typical but confusing requests ("I just like buns with mustard"). In Pup, the class befriends a dog on the loose during recess. Neither the spelling nor the sounds repeated in the title are carried into the mild and passable story. All of the titles contain computer-generated, cartoon illustrations. They are boldly colored but flat, with simplified figures and actions (e.g., a circular-shaped mouth indicates which character is speaking). There are many superior beginning readers that motivate and reinforce skills with controlled and repetitive vocabulary, and that have better illustrations and stronger stories.-Phyllis M.
