CLEARING THE AIR: Air Rage and Outrage - Volume 1: The In-flight Assault and the Aftermath: 'The In-Flight Assault and the Aftermath'
As a professional flight attendant Greta is attacked in an unprovoked assault by the wife of a French aristocrat during the commission of Greta's flight service and safety duties. Initially and after a twenty-year career, Greta believes that her employer-airline, the FAA and FBI will advocate to her and assist her through the legal process and her recovery. Instead, Greta discovers that all three entities are ready and willing to cover-up the assault and to order the single-mother, cabin crew-member into silence. The protagonist is repeatedly told "to be quiet and to behave". Instead, Greta engages in years of research and takes on the mantle of a whistle blower.
'CLEARING THE AIR is an indispensable portrayal of an airline's sinister inner-workings and unseen management style of intimidation. Simultaneously, Greta has also rendered a softer, humane depiction of a working mother who perseveres through the dilemmas of single parenthood even while fighting to maintain her employment as she becomes embroiled in a classic 'David and Goliath' struggle with the airline.
This history which spans 1995 - 2010 evolves into descriptions of harrowing experiences of invasion of privacy; occasions of unwarranted psychiatric evaluation; incidents of workplace violence and a drug-rape.
Themes of love, betrayal, loss, tragedy and a determination to persist so that the truth can prevail in the end, run through the thread of the story. Elements of women's rights and the #Metoo Movement are also prevalent and emerge from this account. The pathological corporate culture of the airline industry is examined while the autocratic rule of 'captain's authority' and 'Tombstone Philosophy' are also challenged. 'CLEARING THE AIR' is highly relevant to current times. Throughout the narrative, the antagonistic operatives of the airline have their own voices and accurate representation. The story ends with the replication of the 2 week jury trial, Greta Anderson vs American Airline, Inc. (2008).

About the Author

Greta Louise Saffin Anderson was born in Scarsdale, New York in 1951. She attended Marymount Secondary School in Tarrytown, New York between 1964 - 1969 and then went to both St. Mary's College and the University of Notre Dame between 1969 - 1973, graduating with majors in both English and Spanish Literature; a Minor in Writing and a Specialization in Latin American Area Studies. After graduating Greta wrote on a few occasions for GLAMOUR Magazine and then took employment as an assistant to two Harvard Ph.D. professors at the satellite MBA Program to the Harvard Business School, INCAE - El Instituo Centroamericano de Administracion de Empresas in Managua, Nicaragua. Greta resided in Managua the year after 'El Gran Terremoto' through 1973 into 1975 and during the Somoza Regime . Returned to the United States, in 1975 Greta joined American Airlines, working in reservation sales, then transferring into the 'Flight Service Department'. During 1986 while on maternity leave, Greta lived in Karen, Kenya, where her neighbor was the renowned anthropologist, Dr. Richard Leakey, with whom Greta shared afternoon teas among friends and had the occasion to fly out to his anthropological excavations by Lake Turkana. A friend from Kenya, Vivien, also offered to introduce Greta to Beryl Markham, the famous aviator and author, just prior to Ms. Markham's unfortunate passing. Greta was one of a very few privileged Americans who attended Beryl Markham's funeral. "West with the Night" remains one of Greta's favorite books. By 1988 - 1991, Greta became an advocate to both domestic violence victims and abused children out of some of her own life experiences while also becoming contributive to The SAFE Program for abused children. Having become an advocate to 'crime victim rights' within the workplace, particularly within the airlines; Greta was inspired to write "Clearing the Air: Air Rage and Outrage". Greta conducted years of research into the matter of unruly passenger and spoke-out on both national and international platforms regarding the topics of violence within the workplace, the causation factors to in-flight violence and to victim's rights. This two volume set calls for a re-emergence of a new feminism and women's rights. 'Clearing the Air: Air Rage and Outrage' is dedicated to both female and male professional, career cabin crew members and to all hard-working U.S. and international airline and labor workers who deserve to be treated with decency, dignity and respect.
