Description: This is a succinct overview of a wide array of vascular surgery interventions, grouped into three parts: arterial aneurysms, lymphatics, and miscellaneous.
Purpose: The authors' goal is to provide a brief but comprehensive overview of vascular surgery. Given the depth and complexity of vascular disease and vascular interventions, this is a noble and ambitious task, and the book fills a void. The authors achieve their goal of brevity, but for vascular surgery residents or fellows, the depth and breadth of the information falls short of comprehensive.
Audience: The authors have written the book to aid vascular surgery fellows and residents, as well as healthcare practitioners from other fields who participate in the care of vascular patients. As is, the content is a bit superficial to be of use in the daily life of a vascular surgery resident or fellow. However, the book may be useful to practitioners in other fields who frequently encounter vascular patients and who would benefit from an overview of vascular surgery procedures and their indications. The authors and editors are experienced clinicians well suited to composing a manual for this purpose.
Features: The first section broadly covers arterial disease, including abdominal aortic aneurysms, acute lower extremity ischemia, aortoiliac disease, upper limb ischemia, mesenteric ischemia, and renovascular disease. The authors present the information for acute lower extremity ischemia with excellent clarity and organization. This first section, however, notably misses information on chronic lower extremity ischemia and carotid atherosclerosis. The second section covers lymphatics, and the third section covers miscellaneous vascular surgery issues, including vascular access for hemodialysis and vasculitis, the latter being especially useful. The book could benefit from a brief overview of deep venous thrombosis. Every section is succinct and lends itself to easy reading in a short time period, which is essential for busy clinicians.
Assessment: The greatest asset this book offers is its novelty. The authors are correct in their assertion that there isn't much else available that provides a succinct overview of vascular surgery. The content seems most appropriate for clinicians outside of vascular surgery who need a handy quick reference on vascular issues.
