Description: This update of a book on spinal anatomy with a focus on both neuroanatomy and the autonomic nervous system adds new illustrations that include advanced imaging of the spine and related structures, along with significant new references. It also includes two appendixes, one related to joints of the spine and the second to terms relating to pain.
Purpose: There are three objectives for this book: to provide an accurate and complete text for students studying the spine, spinal cord, and autonomic nervous system; to serve as a reliable reference for spinal anatomy and related neuroanatomy for clinicians and researchers; and to help bridge the gap between the basic science of anatomy and the applied anatomy of clinical practice. These are important goals, notably in a changing teaching environment where anatomy has to meet clinical objectives as well as basic science objectives.
Audience: The book has three main audiences: healthcare professionals, anatomists, and students. It will find use across disciplines and professions, and could serve as a good source of anatomical information even for practitioners. Drs. Cramer and Darby have taught anatomy for many years and Dr. Cramer is a leading basic science researcher who can combine his clinical knowledge with his basic science knowledge.
Features: This updated edition adds in many new figures that demonstrate underlying radiographic and imaging anatomy of spinal structures, in recognition of the shift in teaching anatomy from stressing rote memorization to focusing on integrating clinical information with basic science knowledge. The book includes hundreds of high-quality illustrations, many in color, and printed on a heavy gloss paper — very well done.
Assessment: This book is extremely well done, and it should find use across professions because it recognizes how anatomy can effectively be taught. The focus on the spine means this will continue to be well used in the chiropractic profession, which is where the authors are based. They have done an admirable job developing this new edition.
