Purpose: The intent is to assist students in understanding the nervous system and acquiring the skills to evaluate the function of the nervous system. The group activities facilitate proficiency at performing the proper tests and help students recognize what an abnormal finding is, since the laboratory sessions are typically performed on healthy subjects. It is important for students to develop competency and proficiency in these skills so they can be effective in the clinical setting.
Audience: The audience is students in a variety of healthcare professions that require training in the nervous system, such as physical therapy, neurology, and neurosurgery, as well as medical students and residents. This book is most appropriate for use in the classroom setting, particularly since it involves group activities. It also is appropriate as a supplement to the material taught about the evaluation and treatment of the nervous system. It does not function well as a standalone book because the answer section for each chapter does not include any definitions for the terms used. Neither are there any details or explanations for many of the activities for group work. Although explanations are not appropriate for all of them, many could be supplemented with a brief description of what to look for and what should be done. If this were included, it would be easier for practitioners to use this book to review information that they may not use often or need to brush up on.

The only drawback to the book, as noted, is that the answer key section lacks some answers or explanations. Having this feature would allow the book to be used by practicing clinicians as a form of reassessment and review. As formatted, the book needs to be used with other teaching materials. For the most effective use, an instructor is required to confirm that laboratory activities are being done correctly.
