Description: This is a welcome compilation of 122 cases appropriate for optometry students or for practitioners who would like to refresh their knowledge. The accompanying online version includes helpful highlighting and notepad features, as well as a clear read aloud function that gives readers flexibility in how they choose to review each section.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a series of basic cases in optometry practice. Many published case reports exist as journal articles or full-book compilations, but there is no other book that brings together so many cases of the type included here in a single resource. This makes this book an excellent teaching tool, as well as a reference for day-to-day practice. The ebook option provides learners with a quick-access reference that can be used during patient care.
Audience: This book is aimed primarily at students and provides clearly presented, entry-level cases rather than the exceptional ones rarely seen in clinical practice. As such, it is extremely helpful for students or early practitioners as they gain experience and confidence. Contributors are experts in their respective areas and are drawn from numerous locations. Many are faculty members at teaching institutions, others are in private practice and see cases like these daily. Most have earned advanced credentials, making them excellent sources for these teaching cases.
Features: As the title indicates, these are real cases, drawn from the experience of the contributors. There is a wide variety, from refractive conditions to anomalies of binocular vision to various disease presentations. Each section includes pertinent patient history, presentation, comments, and discussion of the diagnosis and management. With clear photos and figures, readers can see exactly what the text refers to. Clinical pearls at the conclusion of each case emphasize the important points. The cases are short but are presented in sufficient detail to show the diagnostic and management process clearly. Full-color figures make pertinent features of each case easy to understand. The book is indexed for quick reference to specific clinical entities as well.
Assessment: This is a wonderful addition to the eye care library and will be useful for students as well as for practitioners who want to brush up on cases that they see infrequently.
