Description: This is the ninth edition of this well-respected textbook on clinical chemistry. The previous edition was published in 2017.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a up-to-date, comprehensive reference for students at all levels as well as a resource for instructors and practitioners. These are most worthy objectives, met well (once again) by this edition.
Audience: This book was intended for students at all levels, instructors, and practitioners. This book meets the needs of this intended audience. It would also be of interest to medical specialists interested in how laboratories determine results integral to their clinical practice (e.g. endocrine testing for endocrinology, toxicology testing for antimicrobial dosing, pharmacy, or infectious diseases, or for substance use testing for poison control). The authors are credible authorities in their subjects.
Features: This is a tremendous makeover for this book of clinical chemistry. A big improvement was aligning the material with the ASCP MLT and MLS entry level curriculum and ASCP BOC guidelines. Each chapter follows a standard layout and progression of information. Case studies are sprinkled throughout to test readers' abilities to synthesize the information. The online material is seamlessly accessible and includes additional checkpoints at the end of each chapter to test retention of key facts. The use of color is spectacular, not only in the figures but also in standard presentation of tables and case studies. This is an introductory text directed at early learners and as such, it cannot possibly, nor should it, cover all the nuances of clinical chemistry. The book would be improved with access to the case study answers. They are not published in the hardcopy book nor in the online student version but may be included in the instructor version.
Assessment: This edition carries on the tradition of excellence for this book. If you are learning clinical chemistry or a practitioner wanting a contemporary refresher, this book is for you. Get it.
