Overview

The role and function of the nurse is rapidly changing. Some nurses are now required to undertake clinical diagnosis of the patient, a responsibility traditionally undertaken by a doctor. Clinical Diagnosis helps prepare nurses to fulfill this role, providing them with the skills and underpinning knowledge to make clinical diagnoses of patients effectively. About the Author

Phil Jevon is Resuscitation Officer/ Clinical Skills Lead at The Manor Hospital, Walsall. He runs and directs the Resuscitation Council (UK) ALS, ILS, EPLS Courses and still works regularly in the clinical area. A key part of his role is to provide simulation training for medical students on SIMMAN in clinical examination/diagnosis skills – he has recently been awarded honorary Clinical lecturer in recognition of this work.

Description: This pocket-sized guide to determining clinical diagnoses for nurses is a convenient, handy adjunct to the more comprehensive clinical diagnosis books.
Purpose: The foreword states that the book is designed as a practical guide to support nurses in their clinical decision making.
Audience: A handy, basic, pocket guide on symptom recognition and management, this book is written for practicing nurses. The chapter authors, who appear to be practicing in their fields, are from the U.K. The editor is active in his field, particularly in clinical examination and diagnosis skills.
Features: The book covers the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, neurological, skeletal, and ENT systems. Each chapter has specific learning objectives, which are good, but at times they do not cover all the chapter material. The overview chapter on clinical diagnosis is comprehensive and is an excellent guide to systematic clinical evaluation. The chapters covering ENT and genitourinary systems are somewhat limited in their pragmatic information on commonly seen problems.
Assessment: This handy reference is the first U.K. book to explore clinical diagnosis from a nursing perspective. There are, however, many other pocket guides for clinical assessment and diagnosis that are more comprehensive. This remains a useful, basic, clinical diagnosis guide.
