Description: This pocket-sized book is a compilation of what previously were six separate books detailing specialty-specific errors in laboratory medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to judiciously edit and combine these six books into a single, "clinically valuable" book focused on medical errors related to laboratory testing. This remains a worthy objective, met by this edited encore.
Audience: This is intended for medical students, interns, and residents in all medical fields, practicing physicians, and clinical laboratory technologists. It also might be of interest to those among the educated lay public curious about how laboratory testing influences (appropriately or inappropriately) patient care.
Features: If you already have the discipline-specific six volumes in the Diagnostic Standards of Care series, you already have the content of this book. This book distills the essence of the previous six volumes, while preserving the critical point of how laboratory issues (e.g., ordering an incorrect test, misinterpreting a result, etc.) can adversely impact patient care. The previous six volumes followed a standard format. This edition removes the framing "case with error" and the related "explanation and consequences." Each issue is now stripped to the bare essentials of the "issue," "clinical pitfall," and "standards of care," References previously unique to each issue are now lumped together at the end of the book so readers have to diligently search to find the relevant one. Personally, I liked the six individual volumes, because I like having a concise yet detailed explanation and consequences, as well as the recommended reading unique to each issue.
Assessment: This is a great book for those new to the situation of correctly ordering and interpreting laboratory tests. However, those who want more information should get the original six volumes. All of them are great reads; which one to get simply depends on how much detail and explanation you prefer.
