About the Author

Joseph Weber, Ph.D. (San Francisco, CA) has more than a decade of experience in digital video and its application to television services. He is currently Director of Product Management at personal video recorder (PVR) pioneer TiVo, Inc. Previously, as Director for Digital Video Platforms in the Strategic Assessment department for Cable Television Laboratories, Inc., Dr. Weber participated in the department’s analysis of new technologies and business models that affect the cable industry. His particular focus was on the next generation of digital video technology and the transition of cable services to digital technologies. Dr. Weber also served as a product marketing manager at C-Cube Microsystems and participated in the development of consumer MPEG-2 video encoding technology, including the first PVR devices. Dr. Weber received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley. His thesis was on the measurement and use of visual motion, in particular as applied to robotics. He also holds a Master of Arts in Physics from Berkeley, an MBA from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Notre Dame. After completing his Ph.D., he was a lecturer at the California Institute of Technology and then at Santa Clara University, where he taught classes on video compression, image processing, and computer vision.

Description: Using images and algorithms, this book provides practical information and teaches the decision-making process to those learning the basics of emergency medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to create a broad review of topics covered by the emergency medicine clerkship curriculum for junior level learners in this field.
Audience: The book is written for medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and junior-level residents learning emergency medicine, and the level of the presentation is appropriate for this audience. The authors are educators in emergency medicine, including clerkship directors and assistant/associate residency directors.
Features: The book covers a broad variety of topics in emergency medicine, including procedures and resuscitation algorithms. The format, especially the inclusion of pertinent history, physical examination, and medical decision-making sections, is especially helpful for the intended audience. The algorithms are an innovative way to visually teach the key points and will be very helpful for novice learners. For example, the CVA section includes very helpful images (stroke syndromes, NIHSS) and a simple, easy-to-understand algorithm. The references include major studies in the field (NINDS trial). While the majority of the algorithms are well done, some are oversimplified or slightly outdated. For example, the blunt abdominal trauma algorithm does not mention serial exams and observation in the stable trauma patient. In the algorithm for pediatric patients with otitis media, the AAP recommends the "wait and see" principle for antibiotic administration for children older than 6 months with unilateral, mild AOM.
Assessment: This is a useful addition to the field of emergency medicine, especially for the intended readers. The approach, including the algorithms and the specific focus on the medical decision-making process, is different than other books aimed at students and junior residents.
