About the Author

David H. Barlow, PhD, ABPP, is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry and Founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University. Dr. Barlow has published over 500 articles and book chapters and over 60 books and clinical manuals--some translated into more than 20 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, and Russian--primarily in the areas of emotional disorders and clinical research methodology. His books include Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders, Fifth Edition, Handbook of Assessment and Treatment Planning for Psychological Disorders, Second Edition, and Anxiety and Its Disorders, Second Edition. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including, most recently, the Career/Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. He is past president of the Society of Clinical Psychology and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and past editor of the journals Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice and Behavior Therapy. Dr. Barlow's research has been continually funded by the National Institutes of Health for over 40 years.

Description: This long-established book covers the many facets of empirically based psychotherapy for a variety of psychological disorders.
Purpose: This edition includes updates to address changes in DSM-5, as well as new and evolving treatments.
Audience: It is aimed primarily at graduate students and psychological trainees as a how-to manual. The authors are well-known therapists and researchers.
Features: Reviews of previous editions have detailed the features of this book well, but it is worth mentioning that it covers the major interventions, such as interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and behaviorally based treatments such as exposure therapy. It also discusses emerging acceptance-based therapies. It covers both general premises for the therapies, as well as specific applications for major disorders. Each chapter provides some background on the disorder and common presenting symptoms, an overview of assessment techniques and suggested measures, and then detailed information about treatment. There is a brief discussion of multidisciplinary treatments, such as adjunct pharmacological approaches as appropriate, before detailed information about the psychological treatment. Suggestions are made for opening sessions, sample scripts, and session-by-session guidance for many of the treatments, but some treatment approaches have just a general description without the specific session details. Although this level of detail is acceptable for providing a sense of a treatment approach and the book provides resources for further investigation, the subtitle, A Step-by-Step Treatment Manual, can be misleading. The references are reasonably current and there is fair coverage of some of the ongoing debates in the field as well as unanswered questions so that readers can evaluate the state of the science for themselves.
Assessment: This edition continues the tradition of serving as an excellent resource for graduate students and advanced trainees on the major approaches to treating patients with psychological disorders. This version incorporates important treatment movements in the field, as well emerging diagnostic challenges with DSM-5, making it a worthwhile update.
