Description: This textbook is endorsed by the British Dietetic Association, making it a favored text for dietitians in the U.K. who have a focus on children. The accompanying website includes the option for readers to download all the tables and figures as PDFs and some chapters include PowerPoints of selected figures. All the book's references and resources are only available on this companion site as a downloadable PDF. This fifth edition is an update to the previous edition published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide a practical approach to the nutrition management of children. It covers the spectrum of treating acute and chronic conditions as well as general health and growth. Every practicing dietitian around the world should have a reference that covers the breadth and depth of health. Those who specialize in a particular lifespan need the same and this pediatric text meets the needs of the U.K. dietitians. The website is merely a way to reduce the heft of the book since the references would have added several pages to each chapter. It may be cumbersome to toggle between a computer/reader to assess references and resources, but younger students may find this easier to use.
Audience: The book is written for "professional dietitians," students and their tutors, pediatricians, pediatric nurses, and members of the community health team. I agree that this is a good text for the UK healthcare team as well as U.K. nutrition students. However, this would not be a required choice for those in the U.S. All 43 contributors are professionals in the U.K., including practicing dietitians, some research dietitians, and one psychiatrist. They all appear to be credible authorities on their topics.
Features: This black and white textbook includes 31 chapters covering all aspects of typical nutrition care - healthy eating across the lifespan, eating while sick, and specific chapters covering a chronic or acute condition. All chapters include "Learning Points," text boxes throughout the chapter summarizing key content from the body of the text. This feature allows readers to focus on the more important information more easily. The tables are also highlights, bringing the readers more practical information in a faster method. I find that books from the U.K. usually include far more useful cultural and religious information and this text is no different. One particular chapter delves into "eating for children from minority ethnic groups." The opening table focuses on the top 25 countries of birth of all migrants in the U.K. - Poland, India, and Pakistan are the top three. Multiple tables focus on the foods eaten within each culture and the religious implications that affect nutrition status, and one table includes formulas available in the U.K. that are suitable for religious and cultural diets. While it is hard to be cutting edge with such far-reaching textbooks, some of the references and recommendations based on guidelines are a few years old. The endocrinology chapter cited 2017 and 2019 guidelines.
Assessment: While this book is not a high priority choice in the U.S., it would be a valuable resource and learning tool for U.K. professionals and students.

This new book is an outgrowth of the manual Diets for Sick Children from the Hospital for Sick Children in London and draws on the expertise of 24 dietitians from the Paediatric Group of the British Dietetic Association. The purpose is to provide a practical approach to the nutritional management of a large variety of pediatric disorders responsive to nutritional intervention. It is meant to be used in the clinical pediatric setting in treating sick, rather than healthy, children. The focus is both relevant and timely, for it recognizes that pediatric nutrition has become a specialty-practice area that requires more disease-specific intervention modalities. The book is written for professional dietitians, dietetic students, pediatricians, pediatric nurses, and members of the community health team dealing with children requiring therapeutic diets. It will be most useful, however, for the experienced pediatric dietitians and dietetic students taught by them. For the most part, the material in the book requires a knowledge base of disease pathophysiology, nutrient requirements, and product composition not often shared by other health team members. The chapters are arranged under organ system disorders, rather than diet type, and much information is provided in tabular form, which simplifies interpretation. Each section is preceded by an excellent review of disease pathophysiology giving the rationale and metabolic basis for nutritional intervention. Chapters include disease-specific nutritional requirements, standard diet therapy, and helpfully, emergency treatment during acute illness. References are relevant and include classic as well as recent articles oneach topic. The appendixes list the commercial products and their manufacturers, most helpful to those not from the U.K. This book makes a significant contribution to practitioners and students in the field of pediatric nutrition. It is written by and for those practicing in the U.K. and uses specific requirements, commercial products, and measurements for that country. The excellent instructive features of specific chapters make it useful to the broader audience of pediatric dietitians.
