Overview

The purpose of this course is to help supervisors or potential supervisors in the human services or helping professions to more effectively work with those they are entrusted to supervise. In addition, members of the public may use this course to enhance their personal knowledge of the subject matter presented.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

1. Identify and discuss common problems in supervising counselors/clinicians.
2. Define the basic components of clinical supervision.
3. Discuss the role of consultation in effective work with supervisees.
4. Describe what the psychotherapeutic professions reveal about the importance of empathy and therapeutic alliance in treatment (regardless of specific method or model).
5. Apply these principles of empathy to the practice of clinical supervision.
6. Articulate and discuss the stages of counselor development as they relate to the person- centered approach to clinical supervision.
7. Utilize motivational interviewing approaches with resistant supervisees.
8. Incorporate empathetic, person-centered principles into ethical and legal decision making.
9. Develop a self-care plan that takes into account empathetic approaches to self and others.
10. Assist others in developing both work plans and self-care plans.
