About the Author

Richard J. Frances, MD, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine, and Director of Public and Professional Education, Silver Hill Hospital, New Canaan, Connecticut. He is also in private practice in New York City. Dr. Frances was former President and Medical Director at Silver Hill Hospital; was founding president of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry; and helped found and chaired the Council of Addiction Psychiatry for the American Psychiatric Association. The author of several hundred articles and several books, he is on many editorial boards. He is a frequent lecturer on addiction psychiatry and has appeared numerous times on Court TV.
 
Sheldon I. Miller, MD, is emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and former Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. During his career, he has served on many boards and committees of many national and local organizations. Dr. Miller has authored or coauthored over 60 scientific articles, chapters, and books. He is Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal on Addictions and is a founder of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. Dr. Miller has served on the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He is the president elect of the Illinois Psychiatric Society.
 
Avram H. Mack, MD, is an attending psychiatrist and the Director of Medical Student Education at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and of Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Mack has extensive experience in organized medicine and psychiatry. His other areas of interest in psychiatry have included development, the psychiatric presentation of medical disorders, and the history of psychiatric classification. As a child and forensic psychiatrist, he has treated or evaluated individuals with addictions in many different settings, including general inpatient, outpatient, correctional, juvenile justice, and community, and has lectured to various professional and educational groups. Dr. Mack has been elected to serve as President of the Washington Psychiatric Society (2012-2013).

Description: This is the third edition of this excellent textbook of addiction psychiatry. It updates and details the tremendous advances in the understanding of the neurobiology, genetics, cognitive neuroscience, and family factors in the pathophysiology and etiology of substance use disorders. Written and edited by a group of nationally recognized experts in addiction psychiatry, this book is a welcome addition to the psychiatric literature.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the editors, is to address the great and costly social and medical problems associated with substance use disorders. The editors hope that readers will find in the book the tools useful in helping their addicted patients. The editors have indeed produced in this third edition a user-friendly recipe for bringing clinicians up-to-date.
Audience: The intended audience includes general psychiatrists, addictive psychiatrist, and trainees in addiction psychiatry fellowship programs. The book would also be useful for psychiatry residents, particularly during their addiction psychiatry rotations.
Features: The chapters that were in the second edition have been updated and many chapters have been added, bringing the total to 28 chapters in five parts. Topics covered include neurobiology, historical context, psychological evaluation, laboratory testing, alcohol, tobacco, opioids, and the other commonly abused substances. Special populations are addressed with chapters on comorbidity, pathological gambling, minority populations, the workplace, forensic aspects, pain, elderly patients, HIV/AIDS, and women. The last part of the book reviews various treatment modalities including psychodynamic therapy, cognitive therapy, group/self-help/and network therapy, family therapy, adolescent substance abuse, psychopharmacological interventions, dialectical behavioral therapy, and a particularly helpful chapter on matching treatment to substance abusers. Each chapter ends with timely and useful references and the index section was helpful.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive update of this excellent textbook of addiction psychiatry. All psychiatrists need to be knowledgeable in this area and reading this book would be a step in that direction.

This second edition of an extremely well-regarded textbook features 52 prestigious clinicians, educators, and researchers in the addiction field. This volume presents the essential components of addiction medicine and incorporates recent developments in the field with a number of significant additions and updates to the original edition. The targeted audience includes healthcare providers at all levels of experience, including medical students, psychiatric and primary care residents, psychiatric educators, and veteran practitioners. This volume will be particularly useful as a primary text for teaching and supervising residents and fellows. It is divided into five sections, with the first providing an excellent overview and historical context for the topics that follow. Section two is concerned with screening tools, the evaluation process, and the use of the laboratory. The third section contains chapters on specific substances. Section four covers treatment issues for special populations including minorities, geriatrics, adolescents, AIDS patients, and patients with co-morbid psychiatric illness. The final section explores treatment selection and specific treatment modalities including individual, family, group, cognitive, and psychopharmacological approaches. There is a particularly practical chapter for the primary care clinician in a busy office-based practice. The book concludes with an excellent bibliography and index. As might be expected, the diversity of authorship results in a variety of sometimes conflicting viewpoints; however this is not distracting and only tends to add breadth to this impressive effort. This extremely successful effort provides the reader with abroad but detailed overview of the addictions field. It possesses several significant strengths over similar texts in its emphasis on practical clinical applications.
