Description: This is one of a number of drug reference books published each year for use during rounds.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a medication reference that clinicians can keep in their lab coat pocket during rounds to save them time getting to the information they need when the larger references may not be readily available.
Audience: This can be used by every type of clinician, although it assumes a certain amount of pre-existing medical knowledge to navigate.
Features: Although it cannot be relied upon as a single reference for all information concerning a medication, this pocket guide does give a reasonable, abbreviated summary of what clinicians should recall when prescribing or reviewing a patient's medication history that may include a medicine the clinician is not as familiar with. The size of the book is very convenient, but the resulting very small font of the text may detract from its effectiveness.
Assessment: This pocket guide presents a tremendous amount of information on the FDA-approved medications in the U.S., although in a somewhat small font.
