Description: This text compares and contrasts the results of psychoacoustic experiments completed on normal and hearing-impaired listeners.
Purpose: According to the author, the book is intended to impart an understanding of changes in perception that take place when a person has a cochlear hearing loss. The reduction of speech by hearing-impaired individuals is a complicated process. It is important for students, professionals, and scientists to understand these processes and the author has met this objective. The book fills a void in the current literature.
Audience: It is written for beginning students in speech-language pathology and audiology. The materials are written in a simple and clear style, appropriate for the intended audience. The author is a highly regarded scientist.
Features: This text provides a very brief review of physics of sound, and anatomy and physiology of the auditory system in Chapter One. The subsequent six chapters cover basic topics in psychoacoustics with an emphasis on the response patterns of normal hearing listeners. Excellent summaries of responses of hearing-impaired listeners to the various psychoacoustic experiments are delineated in each of these chapters. The final two chapters discuss speech perception and hearing aids. The figures are carefully integrated into each chapter and highlight the more important features of the materials being presented. There is a bit of irregularity in the depth of materials covered in the chapters. In some, issues are presented in a fairly direct manner while in others, detail that is unnecessary is mentioned.
Assessment: This book fills a void in the literature regarding the perception of sound and speech by hearing-impaired listeners. For example, two textbooks used in classes dealing with fundamentals of hearing, Durrant's Bases of Hearing Science, 3rd Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1995) and Yost's Fundamentals of Hearing: An Introduction (Academic Press, 1994) provide excellent reviews of the normal ear. The Moore text extends the material in a very thoughtful and organized manner by including discussion of cochlear hearing loss.
