Overview

One of the largest, fastest, and most beautiful ships in the world, the Andrea Doria was en route to New York from Italy. Departing from the United States was the much smaller Stockholm. On the foggy night of July 25, 1956, fifty-three miles southeast of Nantucket, the Stockholm sliced through the Doria's steel hull. Within minutes, the sea was pouring into the Italian liner. Eleven hours later, she capsized and sank into the ocean. Associated Press journalist Alvin Moscow recounts the heroic, rapid response of other ships-which averted a catastrophe of the same scale as that of the Titanic-and the official inquest. Moscow delivers a fact-filled, fascinating drama of how a supposedly unsinkable ship ended up at the bottom of the sea.

At 11:10 p.m. on July 25, 1956, the Swedish ocean liner Stockholm struck the Italian ship Andrea Doria, carrying 1,706 passengers, just 53 miles off the coast of Nantucket, MA. Since both ships had radar systems, their captains saw no reason to reduce speed despite foggy conditions. Navigation errors by both vessels resulted in the Stockholm's ramming her sharp bow 30 feet into the side of the Andrea Doria, killing 46 passengers and crew. The ship sank the next morning, making the collision one of the deadliest and most controversial maritime disasters in history. Moscow (The Rockefeller Inheritance) meticulously describes the actions of each ship before the collision, the miraculous rescue of 1,660 passengers, the attempts over the years to affix blame, and the efforts to recover the Andrea Doria's hull. Narrator Mel Foster adopts just the right reportorial tone as he recounts this famous event. Updated to reflect modern technological examinations of the events leading up to the accident, this carefully researched account conveys the drama of the situation convincingly. VERDICT Although Moscow spends too much time on deep sea diving and attempts at salvaging the ship's hull, this book will appeal to history enthusiasts.—Nancy R. Ives, SUNY at Geneseo
