Norah Gaughan, author of STC’s Knitting Nature, joined Berroco as design director after freelancing for most of the major yarn companies and knitting magazines in the industry.
Margery Winter was creative director at Berroco for 12 years, and has been editor-in-chief of Vogue Knitting and Family Circle Knitting, as well as the fashion editor of McCall’s Needlework and Crafts.
Norah Gaughan, author of STC’s Knitting Nature and Comfort Knitting & Crochet: Afghans, is Berroco’s design director; her work has been published by almost all of the major yarn companies and knitting magazines in the industry. She lives in New Hampshire.

A tailored interpretation of a traditional chevron pattern, this afghan features micro-stripes created using two subtly contrasting yarn colors and single and half double crochet stitches. The gentle gradation of color produces a refined result reminiscent of Scottish tweeds.

Marrakesh
Named for the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, this coverlet reflects the city's exotic flavors and rich tones. The solid background is made using crocheted afghan stitch, which requires a particular long hook, and is then embellished with lanky folk art flowers. The monochromatic floral embroidery is a loose interpretation of the gold embroidery found on traditional caftans from the region.

Join 3 Panels together as follows: Attach A to corner of first Panel, ch 2, sl st in corner of 2nd Panel, *ch 2, sk 1-2 edge sts, sl st in first Panel, ch 2, sk 1-2 edge sts, sl st in 2nd Panel, keeping Panels even; repeat from * to end. Join 2nd and 3rd Panels in same manner.
Embroidery: Using B, work embroidery following Diagrams. Block lightly (see Special Techniques, Page 158).
Retro
For Retro, we reached back in time and chose motifs that were all the rage twenty years ago, such as twisted-stitch mock cables, twisted-stitch blocks, and garter ribbing. Then we recombined these classics with a contemporary aesthetic in order to say something new.

Gypsy Patchwork
A wild patchwork quilt in bright hues evokes the gypsy in all of us. Patches of stranded colorwork are interspersed among easy seed-stitch squares and then embellished with relaxed, folkloric embroidery. The blocks are worked separately and then joined with bold, loose stitches. When assembled, this afghan is an explosion of cheerful color.

Bright Star
Inspired by the intricate piecing of patchwork quilts, the large, brightly colored stars in this afghan are mainly composed of mitered squares. Since the color changes within the squares are all in straight, intuitive lines, this is a perfect project on which to learn the art of intarsia. The straight lines also make the chart easy to memorize, so you can comfortably engage in conversation as you work.

Ribbon
This feminine throw is worked in a technique called broomstick lace. While technically crochet, broomstick lace is worked onto a very large knitting needle, which is less cumbersome than the tool originally used for the job —a broomstick. This stitch pattern works up very quickly into a distinctively pretty fabric that is subtly different on each side. We alternated panels with front and back sides facing out and then embellished the seams with an appliquéd cord of crab stitch crochet.

Greenway
Color therapists tout green as the most restful color. With that in mind, we aimed for the ultimate in restfulness with this afghan, combining four shades of green with a neutral. Two rows of crocheted cluster stitch combine to form pretty, daisy-shaped blocks of color, with each daisy fitting neatly into the next.
