Overview

The New Jakarta Ensemble presents music that melds traditional music with modern improvised sounds. The vocals get more space than the instrumentation, and range from chant and qawwali-influenced to pleasing a cappella rounds with the sound and harmonies of Sardinian and Tuvan singing. The percussion is lightly gamelan during one piece, polyrhythmic hand drumming the next. Also included are moments that bring to mind Master Musicians of Jajouka, doo wop, ragas, and Wozzeck. The first half of Commonality is based more heavily in traditional world music forms, while the second ventures into the more abstract realm of modern composition. ~ Joslyn Layne
