Description: This is an introductory, foundational overview of key nursing, public health, and community health nursing concepts. Introductory materials state that every chapter has been updated since the previous edition was published in 2015. The book was first published in 1988.
Purpose: The authors characterize this as a "how-to handbook," and state that it enables readers to employ the nursing process "using a real-life community as our example." The book is separated into three parts: healthy partnerships; working with the community; and diverse communities, each with 5 to10 chapters.
Audience: The target audience is undergraduate generalist nurses, and this is an appropriate guide for new learners. Seventeen scholars contributed to the book.
Features: There is great diversity in the 21 chapters and their objectives. Chapter 2 is a good starting point, describing the essentials of practice for community health nurses. Chapter 3 is a concise review of epidemiology that provides useful tools. Chapter 4 is a collection of data and analyses of environmental health that provides few references to support those data, and none until page 64. An introductory statement referencing Florence Nightingale (1969) [see p. 59] refers to a reprint. In the 30 years since the first edition, many articles cited have become outdated, and many current authoritative sources are not included in this edition. Chapter 19 describes promoting healthy workplace partnerships, and Appendix A is A Guide to Nursing Assessment of the Workplace, but the two documents do not seem to articulate. The appendix references only a 1976 article, missing the opportunity to include current clinical specialty guides published by the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses or the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses. Blue boxes throughout the book provide useful, concise information. Most tables also provide worthwhile outlines or lists of information. But the Take Note boxes with the clipboard and pen icon should be scrutinized carefully before being included in later editions. If the information is important, it seems worthwhile to include in the narrative. If not, then perhaps it should be deleted. Chapter 11 has 15 such boxes, many of which are written like a whispered conversational aside. The index is incomplete, often not including keywords found in the chapters. Essential functions, occupational health nursing, and social determinants of health were not found in the index.
Assessment: This is a useful overview and compendium of information for undergraduate students, and a refresher for nurses new to community health nursing. I have not reviewed previous editions, but I found many outdated (not classic seminal articles) references in this edition.
