Sandra Goldsworthy, PhD, MSc, RN, CNCC(C), CMSN(C), is an associate professor in the faculty of nursing at the University of Calgary, where she holds a research professorship in simulation education.

Leslie Graham, RN, BScN, MN, CNCC, is Professor, Durham College’s Critical Care Nursing E-Learning Graduate Certificate program and the BSN program in collaboration with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

Description: This comprehensive guide to the care of patients on ventilators offers nurses a number of tips and practical applications.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick and easy guide to mechanical ventilation. I have not seen a more comprehensive and easy-to-read book on ventilation.
Audience: Critical care nurses and those caring for patients on mechanical ventilation are the intended audience.
Features: The book begins with a brief review of the respiratory system and goes into depth on types of airways, ET tubes, ventilator systems, and ABGs. It includes case studies and discusses FAQs about ventilator problems. Particularly helpful are the pictures and breakdown of ventilator modes, as well as the case studies. However, the pictures would have been much more appealing in color or perhaps just presented with more definition.
Assessment: I like this book and will use it in practice. It offers easy-to-use, quick tips that will benefit a great number of nurses. Critical care nurses often need help with ventilator modes and types of usage and this book is a great resource.
