About the Author

Stephen R. Thompson, MD, MEd, FRCSC is a sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon at Northern Light Orthopedics. He completed his medical school at the University of Sydney, Residency at University of Maryland and Fellowship at the Fowler-Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic in London, Ontario and then his second at the Oakville Sports Injury Clinic in Oakville, Ontario.

Dr. Thompson is a recognized expert in sports medicine. He is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the widely used and highly respected reference textbook DeLee and Drez’s Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. Dr. Thompson has spent a significant time studying medical education and standardized testing. He has applied this knowledge in his role as the Editor-in-Chief of Miller's Review of Orthopaedics.

Description: This 370-page book is part of the Complications in Orthopaedics series with this edition targeting complications related to techniques in sports medicine. The book is accompanied by an online version that is basically a reproduction of the hard copy but available to the readers as a reference wherever they have internet access. The 43 chapters are each freestanding reviews of the complication potential of a unique technique.
Purpose: The goal of this book is to walk the surgeon through the natural process of surgery and to identify the problems and complications that can occur on each step along the journey. The ideal is to create a valuable source of information that will allow the readers to avoid complications in their own practice and optimize the outcomes of their patients. These are worthy goals and well accomplished by this offering.
Audience: The intended audience is orthopedic surgeons and residents in training. This edition targets those practicing or learning sports medicine techniques. Drs. Thompson and Schmitz have done an admirable job of collecting an impressive cadre of authors who are experts on the specific chapters they were assigned.
Features: Each chapter sequentially walks through each step of the surgical pathway from the perspective of recognizing the potential of complications, the etiology of the complication, and how to avoid it. These chapters provide a perspective that is not always the focus of most procedural targeted texts, yet this focus has the most potential impact to optimize outcomes by avoiding catastrophe.
Assessment: Perhaps the most impactful thing surgeons can do to optimize outcomes and patient satisfaction is to avoid complications. This wonderful text focuses on that goal and will improve the outcomes for every surgeon who reads it and every patient who is lucky enough to have a surgeon that has read this book.
