Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based, and contemporary resource of common and important complications encountered in the care of general, thoracic, vascular, transplant, and pediatric surgery patients.
Audience: Surgeons and residents practicing surgery, especially those presenting in weekly morbidity and mortality conferences, will benefit greatly from this compilation.
Features: The book begins with sections addressing institutional risk management and risks common to all operations (wound healing, infection, shock, and immunosuppressed patients). The remainder comprehensively covers the complications typically encountered in thoracic, vascular, gastric, endocrine, breast, cancer, transplantation, and pediatric surgery. The chapters are uniformly easy to read. For each surgical procedure, the chapter begins with normal goals and outcomes and continues with sections enumerating specific risk factors and complications associated with patient population, technique, and postoperative care. When appropriate, illustrations, radiographs, figures, tables, and algorithms are included, all of which are of excellent quality.
Assessment: This superb book stands alone as an evidence-based resource for the risk assessment and management of surgical complications. Although all of the available surgery overview textbooks (ACS Surgery: Principles and Practice 2006 (WebMD, 2006), Sabiston Textbook of Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice, 17th edition (Elsevier, 2004) and the Greenfield) have short discussions throughout chapters addressing complications as a component of surgical education and care, no other book centers the discussion on risks and complications. As such, this is meant to complement basic surgical texts and assumes the reader already has the background to assimilate the information presented here. The early chapters discuss in detail the past, present, and future of surgery and why complications, and more importantly, systematic prevention, will be a primary focus of surgical education and patient care. The chapters parse the information in a way that is easily navigable by the reader, making this outstanding book one that is likely to become highly regarded and favored by its users.
