Purpose: The book's purpose is to serve as a resource for preparing for boards, diagnosing and managing kidney disease, and reviewing the pathogenesis and treatment of kidney disease. These are worthy objectives, necessary for the field of nephrology. The availability of print and online formats adds value by enhancing access to images and videos which improve comprehension of the material.
Audience: According to the authors, the book's intended audience is nephrology fellows and practicing nephrologists. It also includes students, residents, and other specialists such as renal pathologists, both novices and experts alike. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are indeed credible authorities on the subject, as they are recognized experts in the field of nephrology.
Features: The book discusses all of nephrology, which is a vast field. The best aspects of the book are the explanations, written in a way that is comprehendible to nephrologists-in-training. The pictures and graphics are of excellent quality. One shortcoming of the book is that, occasionally, the information is not completely updated to current practice guidelines.
Assessment: This is a superior quality book and an excellent resource for the intended audience of nephrology trainees. The vast amount of new research and changes in practice guidelines in the field of nephrology necessitates frequent updates to prior editions. Therefore, this seventh edition is justified, as it updates the previous version published approximately five years prior.

The editors attempt to provide an up-to-date academic and scientific overview of the clinical work of a nephrologist, including fluid and electrolytes, hypertension, diabetes, dialysis, and transplantation. Their goal is to produce a useful resource for clinicians, teachers, and nephrology trainees. I believe the editors and contributors have succeeded superbly in meeting these objectives by providing a rather unique and very valuable textbook. Clinical nephrologists, nephrology educators, and nephrology trainees are the intended audience. One hundred and fifty authors contributed to the book and all are experts in their field. This comprehensive and clinically-oriented book covers all aspects of nephrology in a succinct, lucid, and very comprehensible format. It is rich in colorful figures, diagrams, and tables that are very clear and well integrated with the text. Using this powerful format, the authors make complex issues rather easy to understand. This book makes no attempt to replace other excellent, heavily referenced, and multivolume textbooks in nephrology that are currently available. Rather, it provides a richly illustrated, clinically-oriented book. I find it extremely valuable for the practicing nephrologist and especially to trainees in nephrology. Also, this book is a superb resource for teachers/educators in nephrology. The format and the well-designed illustrations make this book quite unique in the field of nephrology.
