Description: This is the second edition of a clinically relevant, well-organized, comprehensive reference about virtually all aspects of pediatric hospital medicine from an excellent group of academic and clinical pediatric hospitalist providers.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a comprehensive account of pediatric hospital medicine, defining what it is and then describing the clinical presentation of these children in the hospital setting. As a pediatric hospitalist with about 35 years of clinical experience, I can say the book accomplishes its goals.
Audience: This second edition is written for pediatric hospital providers. However, it also is a useful book for medical students, residents, fellows, pediatric nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who care for children in the hospital setting. The authors and contributors are credible authorities in pediatric hospital medicine.
Features: The book begins with the definition of hospitalist medicine, then covers quality improvement. This is followed by a systems approach to the diagnosis and management of children in the hospital, with an emphasis on a patient and family centered approach that has been pioneered by hospitalist physicians. The material is well presented and includes concise clinical presentations of signs and symptoms. Each chapter includes a short background then presents text, figures, and tables to help clarify. Finally, key points summarize the chapter and references are provided, which include both classic and pretty current ones, although the latter could probably be updated. The tables and art are excellent.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive, well-organized, clinically relevant reference on pediatric hospital medicine authored and organized by the current leaders in this area. It should be a part of every hospital floor resource center that cares for children. I highly recommend this book.
