Description: This revised book presents updated information about, and guidelines for, the use of nursing models and theories for research, practice, administration, and education. It includes a CD-ROM that contains each chapter's bibliography that can be searched by chapter, last name, title, or keyword. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: Purposes of this book are to clarify the confusion between conceptual models and theory and to provide an exhaustive compilation of the most up-to-date information about the various models and theories.
Audience: According to the author, this book is intended for all nurses and nursing students. It addresses nursing knowledge for research, administration, education, and practice. It is most suitable for graduate students, but it would be an excellent resource for undergraduates. The author is an internationally recognized leader in the area of conceptual models and nursing theory.
Features: The book is divided into four parts: Structure and Use of Nursing Knowledge, Analysis and Evaluation of Conceptual Models of Nursing, Analysis and Evaluation of Nursing Theories, and Nursing Knowledge in the 21st Century. Each chapter starts with an overview and key terms. The nursing process format is used to discuss each conceptual model and theory. Also included are current reviews of published literature as well as strategies for implementation.
Assessment: This is a valuable and current resource of nursing knowledge development. Each chapter contains an extensive reference list as well a bibliography including research using the model or theory, research instruments and tools, and articles pertinent for education, administration, and practice. The CD-ROM is an added bonus and is user-friendly. It provides the reader with a means to find references on certain topics (i.e. qualitative research, paradigms) or certain theorists (i.e. Parse, Watson), or by title or chapter. It is one of the most in-depth and most comprehensive resources on nursing theory.
