Purpose: The textbook provides a thorough description of the basic oral surgery procedures that are performed in the office of the general practitioner. In addition, it covers information on advanced and complex surgical management of patients who are typically referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The authors have exceeded these worthy objectives.
Audience: According to the author, the latest edition is targeted to dental students, oral and maxillofacial surgery residents and private practitioners,. In my judgment, this textbook is an excellent resource especially for the dental student. Every contributor is an extensively-published authority in the field.
Features: Coverage includes fundamental principles of surgical and medical management of oral surgery problems. The book sufficiently covers the depth and breadth of the field. The range of topics from the basics of medical evaluation and patient selection to dentoalvolar surgery and cleft palate repair is impressively presented in a well organized, easy to follow fashion. The concise charts and illustrations are especially helpful for the practitioner. In addition to presenting updates of existing chapters, this sixth edition remains relevant due to its addition of chapters on Medicolegal Considerations, Correction of Dentofacial Deformities, Facial Esthetic Surgery, Surgical Reconstruction of Defects of the Jaws, and expanded dental implant detail.
Assessment: This book is an essential addition to the library of dentists, oral surgeons, residents and dental students. Additionally, the material is covered one volume comparing favorably to the 3rd edition of Peterson's Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2 Volume set by Miloro, et al., published in 2011.

Assessment: This is a good general textbook and reference on oral and maxillofacial surgery for the senior dental student and general practitioner. It is very important for all general practitioners to have a good reference book on oral and maxillofacial surgery, and this is a good detailed reference on the subject.
