About the Author

Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak is a great humanist and social reformer of contemporary India. To the weaker sections of society especially, his is the compassionate face of a paternal redeemer. Initiator of new concepts and founder of new movements for social change, he is internationally known for his contributions towards liberation of scavengers, through low-cost sanitation. A versatile personality, Dr. Pathak combines in himself traits of action sociologist, planner, engineer, administrator and a social reformer. He is the scion of a family of scholars and freedom fighters of Vaishali district (Bihar) where the first democratic republic was set-up in ancient time. Bom on April 2, 1943 in village Rampur Pohiyar, Dr. Pathak did his MA. in Sociology and English and Ph.D. and D. Litt from Patna University receiving gold medals for his record-setting performances. He is Founder of Sulabh International, Chairman of Sulabh Foundation, and Indian Association of Action Sociologists. Dr. Pathak has written many books, reports and addressed conferences national and international. His major publications include Action Sociology and Development, Road to Freedom, Sulabh Shauchalaya—a Study of Directed Change, Sulabh Shauchalaya—a Simple Idea that Worked. Among the distinguished honours, awards and recognition received by Dr. Pathak include one of the highest civil awards in India—Padma Bhushan, and internationally distinguished award The International St. Francis Prize for the Environment, and other equally important awards like K.P. Goenka Memorial Awards, Civic Betterment Award, National Citizen's Award, Dr. Pinnamaneni and Smt. Seethadevi Foundation Award, Bombay Citizens Award, Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award and Limca Book of Records, Man of the Year Award
