Overview

About the Author

Bio Peter Charles Kratcoski earned a PhD in sociology from the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, a MA in sociology from the University of Notre, South Bend, Indiana, and a BA in sociology from King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was selected for several postdoctoral grants by the National Science Foundation. He taught at the College of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota, and at the Pennsylvania State University before assuming the position of assistant professor of sociology at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio in 1969. He retired as professor of criminal justice studies and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Studies at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, where he is currently a professor emeritus and adjunct professor. He has published many books, chapters in books and journal articles in the areas of juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice, international policing, crime prevention, corrections, and victimology. His most recent writing andresearch have focused on juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice, collaborative policing, correctional counselling, financial crimes, corruption and fraud, and victimization of the elderly.

Description: This book discusses treatment modalities that are used in correctional settings, both community and institutional. It explores the history of counseling in corrections, the role of mental health staff, and various treatment methods. This is an update of the fifth edition, published in 2004.
Purpose: According to the preface, the book "is designed to provide information on the counseling and treatment methods currently being used in community and institutional corrections in the United States." It presents "treatment methods and approaches that are most often used by criminal justice agencies."
Audience: The book is intended to provide "students with an overview of the methods used for correctional treatment and counseling, and the tools to begin to think critically about how and when to apply these methods." The author is professor emeritus and adjunct professor at Kent State University and he has published extensively in the fields of policing, crime prevention, corrections, and victimization.
Features: The book first discusses the restorative justice program, which balances the needs of victims, offenders, and communities, and includes diversion programs that ensure that the victim is compensated and the offender receives treatment. With the advent of the victims' rights movement, victims have been included in the various phases of the criminal justice process. Part II explores the roles of mental health professionals in corrections, and notes that corrections officers are being trained in mental healthcare and crisis intervention in order to respond to emergencies. In addition, there is a move in the juvenile justice system to divert nonviolent offenders to supervision in the community instead of incarceration. Classifications within intake units use actuarial instruments to assess risk and need. Research shows that repeat offenders can benefit from probation supervision but they must be carefully screened. At the same time, some offenses have been decriminalized, so there is an increased need for community corrections programs. The last part of the book focuses on treatment modalities used in corrections. Mental health professionals must have good interviewing skills to elicit information needed to make important decisions. Behavior modification is used with both juvenile and adult prisoners. Unfortunately, positive behaviors do not always generalize into the community. Group counseling is widely used in correctional settings due to the large numbers of prisoners who need mental health treatment. Some groups are led by professionals while others are peer-led (substance abuse groups). Counselors must have solid crisis intervention skills in order to assist individuals who have personal or family emergencies. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is very popular in corrections because it is evidence-based and has shown to be effective with this population. The book ends with an interesting discussion of treatment vs. punishment. The book is organized fairly uniformly, with a summary and list of discussion questions at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: This book is well written by experts in the field, and addresses both children and adults. It explores the major treatment modalities in corrections today. Students will benefit greatly from this book.
