Description: This book is part of the series Conceptual Advances in Brain Research.
Purpose: The purpose is to address the forms of interaction between different cortical areas and how this would influence the behavior of neurons. The objectives are worthy, in particular coming from expert authors as represented here.
Audience: The audience is mostly composed of neuroscientists, neurologists, and psychologists, according to the author. It is my opinion that neurosurgeons also would be interested readers, as modern functional neurosurgery involves the knowledge of function of specific regions of the brain and how they interact with each other. The authors are credible authorities in the field.
Features: The eighteen chapters are written by 25 authors. The book is mostly a report of the known anatomical connections in the nervous system. The images are related well to the text and of very good quality, reflecting the overall quality of this book. There is a constant focus on psychiatric issues in association with different cortical areas, not in a pure phrenological manner, but with evidence of specific behavior generated by the function or dysfunction of specific regions of the brain.
Assessment: This is an important book for neurological, neurosurgical, and psychological libraries.
