The collection of eight contributions describes key characteristics of main available countercurrent chromatography (CCC) devices, evaluates which theoretical approaches are useful, and demonstrates the potential of CCC through examples. The two theoretical-approach papers discuss the properties of two-phase solvent systems with regard to their polarities and key physical parameters, and the implementation of experimental design methodology in the retention of the stationary phase inside type J HSCCC and cross-axis devices. Two further chapters give a global view of the three main CCC devices<-->type J and cross-axis devices for the hydrodynamic retention mode and the Sanki type for the hydrostatic retention mode.
